If you are reading this, then you must be interested in Orchids already. We cordially invite you to join us in learning more about these exotic and rewarding plants and blooms.

The Blackhawk Orchid Society (BOS) was formed in 1981 by Warren and Darlene Carlson who served as President and Vice President for many years. The society is affiliated with the AOS, American Orchid Society. Our organization represents a group of people enthusiastic about growing and learning more about orchids. We meet regularly on the fourth Saturday of the month at Klehm Arboretum at 2715 South Main Street, Rockford, IL at 2 PM central time. Click here for directions . Please check our

Calendar of Events to confirm the schedule. (NOTE: April through September meetings are planned for the Clarcor Pavillion at Klehm.)

You can attend meetings without obligation to see if you'd like to join us. Annual membership is just $10 per individual or $15 per household. Members take turns in bringing refreshments for our regular meetings and we also have a picnic in July. You'll find us a friendly society with both beginners and experienced growers welcome. Our members are always willing to share experiences, offer advice, and to hear from you. Plants are displayed at each meeting with explanations by members about their successes and challenges. In a friendly competition for an annual award, points are given for each plant you bring to a meeting and other volunteer services you may provide to the Society.

We are fortunate enough to have Brian Lang, a certified AOS judge, as a regular and hard working member. Brian has a vast knowledge of the field and is always willing to help others. He also serves as our Show Chairman. You are invited to display your orchids for judging at a number of regional orchid shows in which the Society participates. All your care and effort might just result in a ribbon or even an AOS awarded plant!

The annual "Garden Fair" in June at Klehm is an opportunity for members to sell extra plants they may have. (Of course, we all know how hard it is to part with our "Or-Kids".) The society arranges for a tent and display tables. We ask for a contribution of 10% of your sale proceeds to the Society.

You'll really enjoy the annual orchid show this October 24 and 25! Other societies in the region, along with orchid vendors, are represented by magnificent orchid displays. The plants are judged by regional AOS judges so you have even more opportunity to learn from the experts. In addition, most vendors offer a wide variety of orchids at their sales tables, and they are also ready to answer any questions you may have.
